HomeownersA great way for homeowners to make a home fit your personality is to give it the proper upgrades that make it fresh and update it to fit you. Upgrades can be big or small; the important part is that they let your personality show.

If you are thinking about putting your home up for sale in 2018, a little effort can go a long way. Whatever your upgrade may be, the DIY ideas below are a great place for homeowners to start.

Color in the Kitchen

The days of the plain white kitchens are gone. Today, more homeowners are choosing bold accent colors for cabinets, backsplashes, countertops, and more. From vivid orange to dignified navy and everything in between, colors are in.

Another trend is putting stainless steel appliances together with warm, and/or vibrant hues that make the area more welcoming while keeping the clean, smooth look.

Your budget will determine what upgrades you are able to make. Even just concentrating on the paint will make a big difference and will really update your home.

If you can afford it, replace the old appliances with new stainless steel appliances, and even add a decorative and colorful backsplash.

Storage Space Upgrades

Many homeowners struggle with finding space to store items. Your office supplies, cleaning products, tools, seasonal decorations and more need a place to be stored. Many of us are short on this storage space and do not have the budget to pay for an addition to our homes, so we need to be creative in finding areas to store our extras.

If you have a garage, this is a good place to start; if not, start in a closet. Take advantage of your wall space by hanging hooks, peg boards, or wall shelves.

Another way to save space is to purchase furniture pieces that are both functional and decorative. An example is a coffee table that has storage space, an end table that has storage space, a TV stand that has storage space below it, or any other creative piece of furniture you can think of.

Wall Upgrades

Your walls are a blank canvas. You can achieve different looks with your paint, but you can also add texture and dimension with tile, wooden shiplap, exposed brick, or wainscoting.

Try different materials to achieve the look and feel of the room that you desire. You can also try this on only one wall per room if you desire, as to create an accent wall.

Garages Are Part of Your Home

Garages do not have to simply be a place to park your car. You can start with the dirty looking concrete floor. Replace it with an epoxy coating to make it look updated and to fit your style. A bonus with the epoxy flooring is that it is easier to clean.

Don’t stop with the flooring either. Like in your home, your garage has walls for you to decorate and to make your own.

In your garage you can also let your creativity flow and do a creative design on the ceiling. An interlocking wood plank ceiling looks nice and gives you dimension, but take it any direction that you want.

When it comes to an upgrade, it can be as extensive or minor as you like. Remember to make it fit your needs and your personality. Be creative and know that if you do not like the end result you can simply change it again.

Homeowners will also want to keep in mind the ways in which an upgrade or two can help increase your home’s value. When it comes time to sell, you want to be able to realize a solid return on your investment.
